4 Common Problems with BMW e36 Vehicles

The third generation of BMW's 3 Series vehicles, which includes coupes, sedans and convertibles, are known as E36 models. They were produced from 1991 through 1999 and include model numbers 316, 318, 323, 325, 328 and M3. Many of these cars have become very popular amongst BMW enthusiasts because of their great reliability and performance. But like any car that has been on the road for a decade or two, it has shown some faults. These are 4 of the most common E36 problems and if you experience any of them bring your vehicle to a professional BMW mechanic to have the issue repaired.

Rough Idle in E36

A rough idle on an E36 has two common causes, the first is a very simple fix. A dirty idle control valve will cause this problem but luckily it usually just need to be cleaned and not replaced. The second issue pertains more to vehicles produced prior to 1994. A rough idle can be caused by heavy rain flooding the DME compartment on these vehicles.

Burning Oil Smell in E36

If you smell engine oil burning or notice your car producing excessive blue smoke when driving down the road you will want to make an appointment for European auto repair right away. The cam cover gasket has been known to leak oil down the cylinder head and the Double Over Head Cam engines have been known to produce oil leaks that drip into the spark plug wells. An oil leak could lead to major engine damage if the problem isn't resolved due to harsh metal on metal friction.

Water Pump Failure

The water pumps on E36 models use an impeller made of plastic, and this part has been known to fail prematurely. If the water pump fails your car will not be able to push coolant through the engine, resulting in the vehicle overheating This can lead to bigger problems such as a blown head gasket or worse.

BMW Radiator Leaks

The plastic parts of the stock radiators in most E36 models wear out and crack over time due to the extreme heat they are subject to. The parts that are known to spring leaks most often include the top radiator pipe and plastic thermostat housing. A cracked radiator can result in a coolant leak, which again may cause overheating.
