Must Know Mini Cooper Issues

Precision Import Auto Repairs Blog

In the years since BMW relaunched the Mini Cooper series several common problems have become in some of the earlier versions of these vehicles that owners should be informed of so that they can have these issues resolved prior to a need for major engine repair. Be sure to have your Mini inspected for these issues during all regular maintenance services.

Faulty Automatic Transmission

The CVT transmissions in pre 2008 Mini Coopers are known to fail. The problem isn't so much a mechanical failure but the literature passed along by the manufacturer which states that these transmission do not require routine fluid flushes. The reality of the matter is that they do and they need be done about every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to to keep the automatic transmission working properly.

Clutch Failure

If you drive in high density traffic you'll likely experience premature clutch failure in your Mini Cooper. Try leaving extra room and avoid constant shifting when in a jam.

Loose Timing Chain

Mini timing chains have been known to become loose early on in their road life and require replacement. If you ignore this problem it may lead to the chain breaking apart which could cause massive engine damage.

Power Steering Pump Problem

The electric power steering pump on earlier Mini Coopers have become known to fail without signs of premature failure. If your steering suddenly becomes more stiff or otherwise difficult to control while traveling at lower speeds it's likely a new pump may need to be installed. When completing this service it's worth it to test the cooling fan and other parts in the general area at the same time, since the vehicle will need to be torn down in the front end to perform the repair.

Leaky Water Pump If your Mini Cooper has more than 50,000 miles on it be aware that the water pump and thermostat housing are known to spring leaks. It is a good idea to replace these parts before the occurrence of a leak to save many hours of labor.
