Most Common Causes of Engine Failure

Most Common Causes of Engine FailureModern automobiles are fascinating pieces of machinery. They are masterfully engineered to outperform, out maneuver and get better fuel efficiency than their predecessors. But without proper care or attention, you can end up with a vehicle that can't even outrun a kid on a tricycle. Engine failure isn't an issue for most vehicles, but if your car has extremely high mileage or isn't properly taken care of, there is a chance of ending up stuck on the side of the road with major problems. But what actually causes engine failure issues?

Detonation is caused by ill-timed combustion inside the engine that produces mass amounts of heat and pressure in the combustion chamber. Because fuel is combusting when it should not be the excessive heat is produced, usually along with a knocking noise. The reason for this happening can usually be attributed to the loss of the exhaust gas recirculation system. This system ensures a proper air/fuel mixture. However it can also be caused by bad fuel, incorrect ignition timing, wrong spark plug gaps or elevated engine operating temperature.

Improper Lubrication

Likely the most common causes of engine failure is low levels of engine oil. Even if you change the oil on a regular basis, you should regularly check the oil levels to make sure there isn't a leak or that your car isn't burning it. However engine oil starvation can also be caused by a faulty oil pump, high mileage wear and tear, which results in an excessive gap between the main and rod bearings, or gunky oil, which is a result of not changing the oil and/filter.

If your vehicle overheats it put it as risk of mechanical problems, such as a blown head gasket. Common causes of overheating include a coolant leak coming from the radiator or a hose connected to the coolant system, or even the engine itself, if the block is found to be cracked. However other causes of overheating could include a bad thermostat, a faulty electric cooling fan, or a failed water pump. Ensure proper cooling system care by following your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation for coolant flushes. This will help detect any leaks and gives a mechanic the opportunity to inspect other parts of the vehicle's cooling system.

If you experience any signs of engine trouble you shouldn't wait to have the problem diagnosed. Issues could include lack of power, slow acceleration or poor fuel economy. These can often be accompanied by odd noises or smells. For engine repair in Corona visit the team at Precision Import Auto Repairs.
