Car Won't Start? Here's Why!

Car Won't Start? Here's Why!When it comes to vehicles trouble there is no shortage of issues that can prevent you getting from A to B. However, few things are as frustrating as jumping in your car or truck only to have it not start when you turn the key. The starting process for a car is relatively complex, but it only takes a few key components to work together to make it happen. Should one or more of these parts fail you'll be stuck with a car that won't start. Fortunately, it is usually quite simple for a professional auto repair tech to determine the underlying cause. Let's look at the most common reasons a car will not start.

Dead Battery

The top reason a car won't start is a dead battery. While batteries do need to be replaced from time to time, usually every 3 to 5 years or so depending on the type, it is more common for them to die due to leaving the lights on or playing the radio with the engine off. This will drain the battery, requiring a jump start to get it charged back up by the alternator.

Malfunctioning Alternator

The alternator is what powers many electrical components of your car when the engine is running. If the alternator fails or begins to fail you will tend to experience a number of strange electrical issues, such as trouble with the radio, power seats or windows and the engine may seem to sputter. Since the alternator is also what keeps the battery charged its failure will prevent you from being able to start the vehicle as the battery won't have any juice to provide the initial spark to get the engine moving.

Fuel Delivery Issue

If the motor can't get any gas it won't be able to run, obviously. There's a few places the gas may get held up. The most common fuel system problems include a failed fuel pump, but fuel stoppage could also be caused by a clogged fuel filter that needs to be replaced or a fuel injector unit that is in need of service.

Failed Starter

The starter motor is what puts the engine in motion. If it fails you will often hear a loud click, click, click or a single click when you turn the key. In most instances the starter motor is going to need to be replaced to get up and running again.
