6 Triggers of the Check Engine Light
It's unfortunate that the check engine light is regularly ignored by drivers across the country. If this light is turned on you need to make an appointment with your auto repair shop as soon you can so your car can receive proper diagnostics and service. If you put off having the problem checked out then what was likely a small issue will soon become a much more expensive one. The following are six common problems that can result in the illumination of the check engine light.
Failed MAF Sensor
The mass airflow sensor detects incoming air in order to calculate the correct air and fuel mixture as well. If it is unable to do its job you may experience a massive drop in MPGs.
Bad Spark Plug Operation
If your spark plugs are misfiring it will cause your engine to run very rough. Replacing spark plugs is a pretty simple job for most makes and models of vehicles.
EVAP System (Loose Gas Cap)
In a best case scenario you will learn that all that happened was you forgot to tighten the gas cap after filling up. A loose, broken or cracked gas cap will allow fuel vapors to evaporate up the filler hose, meaning you're wasting gas you never got to use. Thankfully the EVAP system is in place to catch this problem.
Malfunctioning O2 Sensor
The oxygen sensor measures oxygen in the exhaust to help calculate the proper air/fuel mixture in the vehicle's engine. More than likely the sensor may just need to be cleaned, but perhaps a replacement will be necessary. If the issue isn't resolved it may result in damage to the catalytic converter.
Failing Catalytic Converter
If it is found that your catalytic converter isn't properly operating you will soon find yourself with an expensive repair bill that likely could have been avoided if you had brought your car to the shop sooner. This is one of the most expensive parts to replace on a car but it generally won't malfunction unless some other problem occurs.
Poor Transmission Function
It is important to note that not all problems that trigger the check engine light have to do directly with the engine. Low transmission fluid is one example of a tranny problem that could turn the light on.
