5 Common Problems with the Saab 9-5
Produced in the US for models years 1999 to 2009, the first generation Saab 9-5 changed little over the course of a decade, aside from aesthetic styling. Throughout the years of production and thereafter a few key issues have been discovered with these vehicles. While not every unit is susceptible to each of these problems, it is important that as the owner of one, you understand that these issues exist. In some cases it may be best to have them serviced prior to experiencing a malfunction or breakdown.
Engine Mounts Break
An available engine for the 9-5, the B235, can produce a lot of torque. With heavy acceleration it is possible to crack the engine mounts. The transmission mount tends to be the first to go but all mounts are at risk. If you car tends to jerk around during acceleration or deceleration you may be experiencing excessive engine movement, a positive sign for failed engine mounts.
Throttle Body Failure
Due to a common short caused by excessive engine heat in the throttle bottle wiring system the throttle body will start to surge, particularly while idling or in cruise control mode. In most cases the only sure fix is to replace the throttle body and wiring.
Crankshaft Position Sensor
The CPS, or crankshaft position sensor, can fail due to excessive heat from the engine as it is bolted directly to the engine block. If this occurs it is likely that you will suffer a no-start situation. In some instances simply letting the engine cool will allow you to start the car once again, but it could happen again.
Fuel Pump Malfunctions
Let it be known, the fuel pump is almost certainly going to fail at some point. In many cases it will leave you stranded, as it will prevent your vehicle from starting. Thankfully this is an easy job for any professional Saab mechanic.
Coolant Bypass Valve Failure
The coolant bypass valve is known to fail, resulting in all of the vehicle’s coolant being emptied onto the ground. This is a part that should be replaced prior to this happening!
