How Auto Maintenance Saves you Gas
Having your vehicle serviced when it seems to be running fine may seem strange, but it is imperative that you provide your car with the attention it needs when it comes to scheduled auto maintenance. Tune up services, oil changes and other factory maintenance ensures your car is running correctly, which means you're getting the best possible fuel economy. This of course saves you gas and money! Here are four ways auto maintenance will keep you away from the pump longer.
Worn Spark Plugs
Spark plugs create the force necessary to make your engine's pistons go up and down. If the spark plugs are dirty or corroded they can misfire, causing a waste of fuel that can greatly lower your MPGs. Be sure to check your owner's manual to find how how often your vehicle needs new spark plugs and spark plug wires installed.
Air Filter Replacement
During oil changes and other maintenance appointments technicians should inspect your air filter to make sure it isn't clogged. Your engine runs off of a mixture of gas and air, and if the filter is clogged and air can't get into the engine your car's computer may compensate by burning more gasoline than necessary.
Properly Inflated Tires
Driving on underinflated tires can cause decrease your fuel efficiency by two MPGs or more, depending on how low your tire(s) is. This is because your car's engine must work harder to get the soft rubber to roll. Tires will be inspected during most maintenance appointments to ensure they are properly filled.
Warm Up Time
While not necessarily an auto maintenance service, you should pay attention to how your car acts when you first fire up the engine. A properly tuned and maintained car will not require more than a few seconds to be ready for the road after you start it. If you car needs much more time than that to warm up because it won't idle right or frequently shuts off, there is clearly something wrong with your vehicle that needs repair and you are currently wasting gas. Remember if you are not moving, you are getting zero miles to the gallon!
