Vehicle Vibrations that Indicate it is Time for Auto Repair

Vehicle Vibrations that Indicate it is Time for Auto RepairCars and trucks have many ways of letting their drivers know that there are potential issues occurring. Commonly a light on the dashboard, such as the check engine light or ABS light, will illuminate. However, this should not be your sole indicator that something is wrong with your vehicle. It is important to always pay attention for signs of trouble. They can come in many forms, including visual queues, strange smells or even odd vibration sensations. The latter is the focus of this article. If you experience some sort of miniature earthquake within your vehicle you'll want to head to the repair shop to ensure that your vehicle doesn't suffer from larger problems down the road.

Shaking gas pedal

An odd vibration that originates in the gas pedal often indicates an exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks are not only bad for your vehicle, as they can greatly decrease engine power and fuel efficiency, but they put you and your passengers at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. This vibration will often be accompanied by loud engine rumbling if there is indeed an exhaust leak.

Vibrating brake pedal

A shaking brake pedal obviously means that your brakes are in need of service. Specifically, a vibration from the brake pedal generally indicates warped rotors. This means they are no longer smooth, which reduces the amount of area available to the brake pads to rub against, thus decreasing the vehicle's braking power. In order to restore the car's braking ability the rotors will need to be replaced if they can't be machined smooth.

Shakey steering wheel

A shaking steering wheel can indicate a few different problems. Most often it is related to an alignment issue. This means that at least one wheel is pointed in a separate direction from the other wheels, which means that the car is trying to go in multiple directions at once, thus causing the wheel to shake back and forth. Another issue that could cause this is a problem with the power steering pump.

Shaking shifter

If the shifter for your transmission, whether automatic or manual, begins to shake and shimmy, it is likely due to some form of transmission trouble. There are numerous problems that can result in this so be sure to get to your mechanic as soon as possible.
