Understanding Automotive Sensors
Your car is equipped with a number of computerized sensors that are designed to help improve the reliability and efficiency of your vehicle. Some of these sensors may need to be replaced as your vehicle ages, to ensure that it continues to run correct. Understanding what these sensors do will make it easier to accept why they need to be replaced, should they fail. We've outlined the duties of six common sensors equipped on most newer vehicles.
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor monitors the amount of air entering the engine and calculates how much of it should be mixed with the gasoline in the combustion chamber for maximum efficiency.
The oxygen (o2) sensor helps determine what the air/fuel mixture should be as well, but from the other side. The o2 sensor is located in the exhaust system and measures the amount of oxygen in the emission fumes to help dictate the amount of gas mixed with the air.
Engine Speed Sensor
This sensor helps prevent sudden engine stops by monition the spinning speed of the crankshaft, which is what controls the fuel injection and timing of the motor.
Spark Knock Sensor
A healthy spark knock sensor is necessary to ensure that fuel is burning at the right time and not exploding erratically, which is known as detonation. Detonation can result in numerous issues, including a blown head gasket, cracked piston rings and even rod bearing damage.
This sensor manages the idle speed of the engine. It is what ensures that speed is increased and decreased appropriately, as necessary.
Fuel Temperature Sensor
To ensure maximum fuel efficiency the fuel temp sensor does its best to prevent fuel that is too hot from entering the motor, as hot fuel burns faster than cooler gasoline.
When a sensor fails it is likely that the check engine light will come on. If you notice that light, or experience performance issues, head to your local auto repair shop right away.
